Singapore, May 4, 2025 — Singapore’s ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) has won big in the 2025 general elections. The party secured 87 out of 97 parliamentary seats, according to local reports. This result gives Prime Minister Lawrence Wong a strong start to his first full term after taking office last year.
Voters supported Wong and the PAP despite global economic uncertainty. Trade tensions, including US tariffs, have affected Singapore’s economy. Still, the public has shown trust in the PAP’s leadership during tough times.
Wong, 52, stepped into the role of prime minister in May 2024. He succeeded Lee Hsien Loong, who stepped down after nearly 20 years in power. The 2025 elections were seen as Wong’s first major test. After the results from the Marsiling–Yew Tee constituency came in, Wong thanked voters for their support. “We’re grateful for your strong mandate,” he said. “We’ll work even harder to honour your trust.”
Since independence in 1965, no other party has ruled Singapore. The PAP has now won every general election for 60 years. This long stretch of governance makes Singapore one of the world’s most politically stable countries.
The 2025 vote marked Singapore’s 14th general election since independence and the 19th overall. The Elections Department reported over 2.75 million registered voters and 1,240 polling stations. Voters cast ballots for 92 of the 97 parliamentary seats.
Voting lasted 12 hours and closed at 8 PM local time. The strong turnout and decisive win show that many Singaporeans still back the PAP’s direction.
With this win, PM Wong gains a clear political mandate. Observers expect him to continue PAP’s policies but also bring a new leadership style. He must now manage rising living costs, regional tensions, and generational change in leadership.
