Details of the Robbery

On the morning of April 30, 2025, Zia-ul-Haq, a native of Uttar Pradesh, booked a Hyundai Xcent taxi (HR 67 C 1782) from Dera Bassi bus stand to Ambala railway station. During the journey, four unidentified men, including the driver, robbed him at gunpoint near Jawahrapur Chowk on the Chandigarh-Ambala National Highway. The robbers took ₹20,600 cash, his ATM card, mobile phone, and crucial documents.

Following the incident, DIG Ropar Range, Sh. Harcharan Singh Bhullar, IPS, directed police teams to prioritize the investigation.

Police Investigation and Arrests

Police registered FIR No. 111 on May 2, 2025, under Sections 309(4), 140(3), 351(1), 351(3), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Dera Bassi Police Station. A special task force led by SP (Rural) Manpreet Singh and DSP Dera Bassi Bikramjit Singh Brar was formed, with SHO Inspector Sumit Mor heading the field operations.

The team used technical surveillance and human intelligence to identify and locate the accused. They arrested all four from Ramgarh Mubarakpur Road, Dera Bassi on the evening of May 2.

Accused Injured During Recovery Operation

Today, while attempting to recover a weapon near Village Phudha, accused Satinder Singh tried to flee police custody by jumping from a rooftop. He fractured his left ankle during the escape attempt and is currently under medical care.

Gang’s Modus Operandi and Prior Offences

Initial investigation reveals that this gang had targeted immigrant workers, mainly from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, robbing them during travel. Police suspect their involvement in several other similar cases in the Tricity area.

Ongoing Investigation

Further inquiries are underway to uncover the gang’s network, possible collaborators, and their involvement in other crimes.
