The Punjab government has drawn criticism after the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) accused it of replacing an original image of the Harmandir Sahib with an AI-generated version. The controversy stems from a recent government advertisement inviting public input for upcoming Sikh centenary celebrations.
SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami criticized the use of an artificial image, calling it an insult to Sikh religious sentiments. He said the government failed to respect the sacred nature of the Harmandir Sahib by digitally altering its depiction.
“The government’s ad disrespects Sikh beliefs. Harmandir Sahib is a spiritual center, not just a monument. Changing its image without consulting SGPC shows disregard for Sikh faith,” Dhami said.
Dhami demanded a public apology from the Punjab government. He also asked for a clear explanation of why an AI-generated image was used, especially when numerous authentic photos of the Harmandir Sahib are widely available.
Many Sikhs and religious groups expressed anger on social media. They questioned why the government chose AI over real photographs. Users accused the government of being insensitive toward Sikh values.
“Why use AI when real images exist? This isn’t innovation—it’s ignorance,” wrote a user on X (formerly Twitter).
Dhami clarified that organizing centenary events is the SGPC’s responsibility, not the government’s. He acknowledged the state’s role in developing towns linked to Sikh Gurus. However, he insisted the SGPC must lead any religious representation.
The incident raises concerns about using AI in religious and cultural contexts. While AI can offer creative tools, faith-based institutions stress that sacred imagery must remain authentic and respectful.
Guru Arjan Dev Ji founded the Harmandir Sahib in 1604. Maharaja Ranjit Singh later decorated it with marble and gold, which earned it the title “Golden Temple.” The shrine is the most sacred site in Sikhism and welcomes people of all faiths.
SGPC’s reaction highlights the importance of cultural and religious sensitivity. Governments must consult relevant institutions before using religious images in public campaigns. Innovation must never come at the cost of faith and community respect.
