Powerful Earthquake Strikes Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, Tsunami Warning Issued
Moscow, September 13, 2025 – A powerful earthquake shook Russia’s eastern Kamchatka Peninsula on Saturday morning, prompting a tsunami warning for parts of the Pacific.
According to Reuters, the quake measured 7.1 on the Richter scale and was centered off the eastern coast of Kamchatka. The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported that the tremor occurred at a shallow depth of about 10 kilometers, increasing the risk of stronger surface-level shaking.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) provided slightly different figures, recording the quake at 7.4 magnitude with a depth of 39.5 kilometers. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) cautioned that the earthquake could generate hazardous tsunami waves in the surrounding region.
This seismic event comes just weeks after the same area experienced a massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake in July, which triggered tsunami alerts across multiple Pacific nations.
Japan’s national broadcaster NHK, citing the Japan Meteorological Agency, reported that no tsunami warning has been issued for Japan at this stage.
Authorities in the affected region are closely monitoring the situation, while emergency services remain on high alert for potential aftershocks and coastal impacts.
