Powerful 7.2 Earthquake Strikes Southern Philippines, Tsunami Warning Issued

Manila, October 10, 2025 — A powerful earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale struck the southern Philippines on Friday, prompting authorities to issue a tsunami warning for coastal areas.

According to early reports, no major damage or casualties have been recorded so far. However, emergency agencies have urged residents in coastal regions to move to higher and safer ground as a precaution.

The earthquake’s epicenter was located about 10 kilometers beneath the seabed, near coastal areas, increasing the potential for undersea tremors to trigger a tsunami. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has warned that tsunami waves could reach the shores within two hours of the quake.

The U.S. Tsunami Warning System also cautioned that a potentially life-threatening tsunami could occur within 300 kilometers of the epicenter. Authorities have also alerted the public to the possibility of aftershocks that may follow the initial quake.

Local officials are closely monitoring the situation, while disaster response teams remain on standby in case evacuation and relief operations are required.
