Power Blackouts Grip Ukraine Ahead of Christmas After Massive Russian Strikes—What Will Zelenskyy Do Next?

Ukraine is reeling from relentless Russian attacks. Following Russia’s largest aerial assault yet, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appealed to neighbors on Tuesday to ramp up pressure on Moscow to end the war. Russia launched an aerial barrage on Ukraine Monday night, firing over 650 drones and 30 missiles at at least 13 regions. The strikes killed three people, including a four-year-old child.

In a video address to the nation, President Zelenskyy stated that ensuring Russia does not sabotage diplomacy is key to any peace agreement. He noted that the attacks damaged a power station but assured the public that electricity would be restored by Christmas.

Ukraine Needs Support—Zelenskyy

Zelenskyy said Ukraine’s day began with Russia’s despicable attacks, causing loss of life and property. He accused Russia of targeting power plants to prevent Ukrainians from celebrating Christmas. Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine needs daily support, including missiles for air defense and funding to produce weapons.

The European Council announced €90 billion in financial aid for Ukraine for 2026-27. Afterward, President Zelenskyy spoke with Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and thanked her.

‘Pressure on Russia Essential’

Zelenskyy affirmed Ukraine’s full cooperation with any peace agreement and commitment to fulfilling its documents. He stressed that Ukraine will never obstruct the path to peace. Zelenskyy urged Russia to seriously consider ending the war, warning that pressure would mount if it refuses.
