Chaos broke out at the Government Medical College in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, after smoke was seen emerging from the operation theatre in the trauma centre. The incident caused panic among patients and hospital staff, leading to a stampede-like situation.
According to early reports, sudden smoke started billowing from the operation theatre, prompting fears of a fire or gas leak. Patients were immediately evacuated from the affected areas as a safety precaution.
Initial information suggests a gas leak—likely oxygen gas—may have caused the incident. Several people experienced breathing difficulties, further escalating the situation.
The hospital’s Chief Medical Superintendent, Dr. Nepal Singh, quickly reached the scene to assess the situation. The fire brigade was also called and responded promptly to ensure the safety of patients and staff.
Emergency protocols were activated, and efforts are ongoing to ensure the area is safe and to investigate the cause of the leak.
