New Delhi, August 18, 2025 – Opposition parties under the INDIA alliance came together on Monday to discuss the possibility of initiating an impeachment motion against the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC).
During a strategy meeting held inside Parliament, alliance leaders expressed concerns over what they described as serious charges against the Election Commission. They agreed that if necessary, the opposition could move an impeachment motion under constitutional provisions to remove the CEC from office.
Congress MP Syed Nasir Hussain clarified that no formal proposal has been placed yet, but said, “If the situation arises, the alliance will explore this option.”
As per the Constitution, the Chief Election Commissioner can be removed from office only through an impeachment motion in Parliament, a process similar to that of a Supreme Court judge.
Meanwhile, the Rajya Sabha was adjourned within minutes of commencing on Monday morning, following loud protests by opposition members. The uproar was linked to multiple issues, including alleged irregularities in Bihar’s voter list during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. The House will reconvene at 2 p.m.
