North Korea Threatens Attack After U.S.–South Korea Security Meeting

Tensions between North Korea and South Korea have escalated further, with the involvement of the United States adding to the strain. The U.S. recently deployed an aircraft carrier to South Korea and also held a security meeting with Seoul. These developments have drawn a sharp reaction from North Korea.

On Saturday, North Korean Defense Minister No Kwang Chol issued a strong warning, saying North Korea could carry out “more offensive actions,” implying the possibility of a major military strike.

The statement came after the U.S. aircraft carrier USS George Washington arrived in South Korea and the two allies conducted a high-level security consultation meeting. North Korea has accused the U.S.–South Korea alliance of escalating tensions in the region.

Just a day earlier, North Korea launched a ballistic missile into the sea from its eastern coast. The launch came in response to new U.S. sanctions targeting North Korean individuals and organizations accused of involvement in cyber money laundering.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had recently said that the primary goal of the U.S.–South Korea alliance is to deter North Korea. In reaction, Defense Minister No Kwang Chol said that the arrival of the U.S. carrier in Busan and the recent joint air exercises have worsened the situation. He warned that North Korea would take aggressive measures to “ensure security and protect peace” against what it calls enemy threats.

This latest exchange underscores the growing friction in the Korean Peninsula, where military posturing and retaliatory actions continue to heighten regional tension.
