Nobel Peace Prize Winner Arrested Again. Why is Narges Mohammadi in the News? She’s Been Arrested 13 Times.

Nobel Laureate’s Arrest: Iranian police have violently arrested Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi, imprisoning her and holding her at an undisclosed location. She was released on medical grounds last year, but the Iranian government is now maintaining silence over her re-arrest.

Narges Mohammadi has spent significant portions of her life in prison.

Iran’s Ali Khamenei government has once again arrested and detained Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi. Her husband, Taghi Rahmani, said security guards dragged her away by force and held her at an undisclosed location. This incident occurred just days after her temporary release following a hunger strike during the 2024 presidential elections.

Narges Mohammadi’s team announced her arrest using a freeze-frame from a video at the #Khosrow_Alikordi memorial. The original footage contains audio where people chant “Long Live the Shah” and loudly disrupt her speech.

Nobel Prize Awarded in 2023
52-year-old Narges Mohammadi received the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize for her work on women’s and children’s rights and the Mahsa Amini protest movement. She has been in prison since 2010, enduring over 100 lashings. After her medical release last year, the Khamenei government remains silent on her re-arrest.

Arrested During Memorial Event
Mashhad Governor Hassan Hosseini stated the 53-year-old human rights activist was arrested during a memorial service for late human rights lawyer Khosrow Alikordi. Several supporters were also detained. Narges arrived without a hijab, addressed the crowd, triggering chants.

Life in Danger After Surgery
Last year, Narges suffered a heart attack in prison and was diagnosed with a bone tumor requiring major surgery. Doctors warned re-imprisonment could be fatal. Despite this, she continued advocating for rights, leading to 13 arrests and years in prison—including winning the Nobel while incarcerated.

Second Iranian Woman to Win Nobel
After Shirin Ebadi (2003), Narges is the second Iranian woman to win the Nobel in 2023, making her the 19th woman worldwide. She also received the 2018 Andrei Sakharov Prize for campaigning against the death penalty and fighting oppression of Iranian women.
