No Secrets: Putin Reveals What Happened During 45-Minute Car Ride with PM Modi

Last week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin surprised the world when they shared a 45-minute car journey in China during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit. Until now, it was unclear what the two leaders had discussed inside the vehicle. Putin has finally offered a hint, saying the conversation touched upon an issue related to the United States—though he refrained from giving detailed disclosures.

Speaking to reporters, Putin said, “Well, it’s no secret. I told him about my talks in Alaska.” Notably, Putin had met U.S. President Donald Trump in Alaska in August, where the two leaders discussed the ongoing war in Ukraine. However, that meeting did not result in any concrete agreement. Following the Alaska talks, Putin also had a phone call with Modi, during which he briefed the Indian side about his exchange with Trump.

Afterward, Prime Minister Modi posted, “My friend President Putin, thank you for your call and for sharing insights from your recent meeting with President Trump in Alaska. India has consistently called for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict and supports all efforts in this regard. I look forward to our continued exchanges in the days ahead.”

The Car Ride in China
The unusual car ride occurred in Tianjin, China, where both leaders attended the annual SCO summit. Before their official discussions, Modi and Putin left the venue together in the same car after wrapping up their respective programs. Interestingly, Putin waited nearly 10 minutes inside the vehicle before Modi arrived. When they reached the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, instead of immediately stepping out, the two leaders remained seated and continued talking for around 45 minutes.

A Sensitive Timing
The timing of the Modi-Putin meeting carries added significance. It came as former U.S. President Donald Trump intensified criticism of India for purchasing Russian oil. Washington has not only imposed a 50% duty on certain Indian goods but has also threatened further sanctions if New Delhi continues energy trade with Moscow.

While Putin has avoided sharing the full details of the private exchange, the episode highlights the importance of India-Russia strategic communication at a time of heightened global tensions involving the United States, Ukraine, and energy security.
