A shocking incident from New Zealand has grabbed global attention after a thief swallowed an egg-shaped diamond pendant worth over ₹17 lakh in an attempt to steal it. Police later recovered the pendant from his stomach – without any medical procedure.
According to a BBC report, the man swallowed the expensive jewellery piece at Partridge Jewellers in central Auckland. The 32-year-old was arrested just minutes after committing the theft.
Police officials confirmed that the pendant – known as a Fabergé egg – was successfully “recovered naturally,” meaning doctors did not need to surgically remove it. The suspect was kept under medical observation until the pendant passed through his system.
The jewellery piece is valued at NZ$33,585 (over ₹17 lakh).
According to the jeweller’s website, the Fabergé egg pendant contains:
60 white diamonds
15 blue sapphires
A tiny octopus-shaped ornament made from 18-carat gold, hidden inside the egg
The design is inspired by the 1983 James Bond film “Octopussy,” which revolves around the theft of a Fabergé egg.
Police said that since the suspect was in custody, it was their responsibility to monitor him until the pendant was recovered. The man has now been charged with theft.
Fabergé, founded nearly 200 years ago in Russia, is world-famous for its luxury gemstone and precious metal eggs.
