New Year Eve Twist: Zelenskyy Signals Major Russia War Breakthrough Ahead of Trump Summit
Kyiv – Hopes for ending the four-year Russia-Ukraine war have reignited just before New Year’s. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy shared a significant update on Friday, hinting at key decisions before 2026 and announcing an imminent high-level meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump to push for a concrete peace plan.
“Plenty can be decided before the New Year. We’re not wasting a single day. Agreement reached for a high-level meeting with President Trump, and we’ll meet soon,” Zelenskyy posted on social media. This follows weeks of talks between Kyiv and Washington, yielding a draft 20-point peace proposal shared with Moscow.
The announcement underscores intensified diplomatic efforts amid ongoing battlefield clashes and global pressure. Zelenskyy described recent discussions with U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner as positive, noting most documents are ready though sensitive issues remain.
Unlike prior proposals, this one avoids demanding Ukraine cede territory or abandon NATO aspirations. Key elements include:
Security guarantees against future Russian attacks
Aid for Ukraine’s reconstruction
Ceasefire along current frontlines
Russia would withdraw from areas like Kharkiv and Mykolaiv, while Ukraine could agree to a non-militarized zone in parts of Donetsk—if Moscow reciprocates.
Recent meetings produced the 20-point draft sent to Russia. Zelenskyy acknowledged upcoming challenges but expressed optimism: “The coming period could be turbulent, but working with the U.S. team, we know how to move this forward.” He thanked America for its support.
Moscow has shown no softening yet. The Kremlin is reviewing the proposal without comment on details. President Vladimir Putin insists Ukraine retreat from Donetsk and Luhansk and drop NATO plans. Russia’s Foreign Ministry called progress “slow but steady.”
Zelenskyy’s remarks signal accelerating peace bids, with eyes on Putin as global politics braces for potential breakthroughs in the days ahead.
