Mumbai Reels Under Torrential Rains, 7 Dead in Maharashtra; IMD Issues Red Alert
Mumbai is battling relentless heavy rainfall for the fourth consecutive day, leaving the city waterlogged.
Several low-lying areas are submerged, with waist-deep water in many places. The Andheri subway has been shut down due to flooding.
In the past 24 hours, record rainfall has been reported, disrupting normal life.
Schools and colleges have been closed, while flight operations and road traffic have also been severely hit.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert until August 21.
Casualties and Damage
So far, 7 people have died across Maharashtra due to rain-related incidents.
In Nanded district, over 200 villagers are stranded, prompting the army’s deployment for rescue operations.
In the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar division, 800 villages have been affected.
More than 200,000 hectares of crops have been destroyed in Vidarbha, while 205 cattle have perished.
Five people are missing from Mukhed taluka in Nanded district.
Government Response
Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis reviewed the situation, saying the next 10–12 hours are critical.
SDRF teams and the army are conducting rescue and relief operations.
Political Reaction
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray blamed the BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation), alleging corruption and lack of preparedness due to the absence of elected representatives for the past three years.
