A Mexican Navy ship struck the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City on Saturday evening. The tall ship, named Cuauhtémoc, was trying to sail under the bridge at around 8:26 PM. However, its two 147-foot masts collided with the structure. At the time of the crash, 277 people were onboard, including officers, sailors, and cadets.
Mayor Eric Adams confirmed the incident during a press briefing. According to him, 19 people sustained injuries. Among them, four remain in serious condition. Fortunately, rescue teams responded quickly and transported all the injured to nearby hospitals. So far, officials have not released the names of the victims.
A video of the crash has quickly gone viral on social media. In the clip, the ship appears decorated with lights and moves slowly toward the bridge. Just before impact, many crew members can be seen on the upper deck. As the masts strike the bridge, several of them lose balance and fall. Others grab onto rigging to avoid injury. Meanwhile, onlookers watching from the shore run in panic.
The ship was under the control of naval cadets during a public visit. Due to the festive setup, many people had gathered nearby, increasing the sense of chaos.
The New York Fire Department reported that emergency response teams began rescue efforts within minutes. In addition, authorities launched an investigation to determine the cause. They are considering several possibilities, including navigation errors or miscommunication.
Although the ship remained afloat, experts are still assessing the extent of structural damage. Officials have not stated whether the Brooklyn Bridge suffered any major harm.
The Cuauhtémoc is not just any ship. In fact, it is a renowned training vessel used by the Mexican Navy to prepare its cadets. Furthermore, it regularly visits international ports as part of goodwill missions and naval diplomacy.
For now, maritime officials are reviewing safety protocols to prevent future incidents. More updates are expected as the investigation continues.
