According to local authorities, the construction team—not affiliated with utility company PG&E (Pacific Gas & Electric)—hit the gas pipeline by mistake. The ruptured line triggered a violent explosion, which was captured on a nearby home’s Ring doorbell camera. The dramatic footage has gone viral on social media, showing a large structure shaking violently from the shockwave.
Officials confirmed that six people were injured in the blast and were rushed to the hospital. Thankfully, no deaths have been reported so far.
The explosion shattered windows in nearby houses, damaged vehicles parked on the street, and caused severe structural damage to multiple buildings.
The fire that erupted after the explosion was intense, forcing firefighters to battle the flames for hours. The Alameda County Fire Department responded to the emergency and urged the public to stay away from the area around Interstate 238, where emergency operations continue.
Authorities reported that specialized technical teams are working tirelessly to shut off the gas flow safely and prevent further danger.
Hayward, the site of the accident, has a population of around 160,000 and is located roughly 24 kilometers (15 miles) south of Oakland. The city witnessed significant disruption as emergency responders and utility teams worked through the night to stabilize the area.
Officials are expected to release further updates as investigations into the cause and responsibility of the incident continue.
