Maharashtra Shock: Sub-Inspector Arrested in Woman Doctor’s Suicide Case; Family Demands Death Penalty
Date: October 26, 2025 |
In a major development in the suicide case of a woman government doctor in Maharashtra’s Satara district, police have arrested Sub-Inspector Gopal Badane, who had been on the run since the incident.
According to a senior police officer, Badane surrendered himself at the Phaltan Rural Police Station late Saturday night and was taken into custody. Earlier, a case had been registered against him and another person on charges of abetment to suicide. The officer confirmed that Badane had absconded immediately after the case was filed.
The case came to light after the 28-year-old doctor, originally from Beed district in Maharashtra’s Marathwada region, was found hanging in a hotel room in Phaltan town on Thursday night. She was working at a government hospital in Satara district.
A suicide note found on her palm contained shocking allegations. The deceased doctor accused Sub-Inspector Gopal Badane of repeatedly raping her and claimed that another man, identified as software engineer Prashant Banker, was mentally harassing her.
Earlier in the investigation, police had arrested Banker, who is reportedly the son of the landlord of the house where the doctor had been staying. Both accused are now facing charges of rape and abetment to suicide under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
Following the incident, Badane was suspended from his position pending investigation.
The doctor’s funeral was held on Friday night at her ancestral home in Vadwani tehsil of Beed district. Her grieving family members have demanded the death penalty for both accused. One relative alleged that the young doctor had complained multiple times about being harassed but her pleas for help went unheard, ultimately pushing her to take her own life.
Police have assured that the investigation will be conducted swiftly and fairly, with all evidence being carefully examined to ensure justice for the victim.
