In response to escalating violence, looting, and unrest, the city of Los Angeles has declared a local emergency and imposed a nighttime curfew in its downtown area. Mayor Karen Bass announced the decision late Tuesday, calling for urgent measures to restore order and urging former President Donald Trump to stop federal raids that she says are further inflaming tensions.
Speaking at a press conference, Mayor Bass stated, “I am declaring a local emergency and have issued a curfew for downtown Los Angeles to curb looting and property destruction.” The curfew is scheduled to remain in effect from 8 PM Tuesday to 6 AM Wednesday (local time), covering approximately one square mile (2.59 square kilometers) of the city’s core — an area that has seen continued protests since last Friday.
According to city reports, at least 23 businesses have reported incidents of looting, prompting increased police presence and emergency protocols. The mayor emphasized that the situation has reached a “critical point” and demanded swift action to prevent further escalation.
In a rare move, Mayor Bass publicly appealed to Donald Trump, urging him to suspend federal enforcement raids in the city, which she said are contributing to the chaos. “I appeal to Donald Trump to stop these raids,” she said. The nature of these operations has not been fully detailed, but sources suggest federal agents have been conducting sweeps in connection with immigration and organized crime probes, coinciding with the unrest.
