A shocking case of mass food poisoning has shaken China after over 200 children from a kindergarten in Tianshui city, Gansu province, suddenly fell ill due to lead-laced food. The cause was traced back to food items mixed with industrial paint, resulting in dangerously high levels of lead exposure. The incident has prompted national outrage and an urgent investigation.
The incident occurred on July 1, 2025, at the Peixin Kindergarten in Tianshui, where 233 children experienced sudden symptoms shortly after their lunch. Many of them began vomiting, experienced dizziness, and some even lost consciousness. All affected children were rushed to hospitals for immediate medical attention. Fortunately, timely intervention prevented any fatalities.
After the incident, local police collected food samples from the kindergarten for testing. The laboratory results revealed shocking details — the food contained alarmingly high levels of lead, originating from paint that had been mixed into the meals. In particular, steamed cakes made from red dates and corn sausage rolls served for dinner were found to contain 1052 mg/kg and 1340 mg/kg of lead respectively — far exceeding China’s legal limit of 0.5 mg/kg.
Blood tests confirmed abnormal lead levels in the affected children’s bodies. Doctors had reportedly already warned the school administration about possible food contamination based on the initial symptoms observed.
Further investigation led to a disturbing discovery. Security footage from the kindergarten kitchen showed a staff member pouring paint into a mixing bowl and blending it with food ingredients. This evidence has intensified public anger and led to swift police action.
Following the investigation, nine individuals including the kindergarten’s principal were taken into custody. Two suspects were later released on bail, while the others remain under investigation. Authorities have assured concerned parents that strict legal action will be taken against those responsible for endangering the lives of children.
The news has triggered a massive outcry across China, with parents demanding justice and tougher food safety regulations. Officials have vowed transparency and swift accountability. “This could have resulted in a tragedy if not treated in time,” said a police spokesperson, adding that long-term health monitoring of the affected children is underway.
This disturbing episode has reignited concerns over food safety and regulatory enforcement in educational institutions across China. Authorities are now under immense pressure to ensure such negligence is never repeated.
