US Vice-President JD Vance recently met with Cardinal Pietro Parolin and Archbishop Paul Gallagher during a visit to the Vatican on Saturday. The discussions focused on key international issues such as immigration, as well as the ongoing wars in Ukraine and Gaza.

Vance, a Catholic convert, held talks with Vatican officials about the Trump administration’s stance on humanitarian concerns and immigration policies. The Vatican expressed concerns regarding the treatment of migrants and refugees, emphasizing the importance of human dignity in addressing global crises.

The Vatican has previously criticized the Trump administration’s immigration policies, particularly the mass deportations and cuts to international aid. During this meeting, Vance defended the administration’s policies, but the Vatican reiterated its call for more inclusive and compassionate approaches to these issues.

In addition to immigration, the talks also addressed the war in Ukraine and the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The Vatican expressed hope for peaceful solutions and reaffirmed the right of Ukraine to its territorial integrity, while emphasizing the need for diplomatic dialogue.

Vance’s visit comes amidst tensions between conservative Catholic views in the US and the progressive stance of Pope Francis, particularly on issues like social justice and capital punishment.
