The Israeli security cabinet has approved a military plan to take full control of the Gaza Strip and stay there indefinitely. Two Israeli officials confirmed the move, which could significantly escalate the war and deepen the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Cabinet members voted early Monday, just hours after the military chief announced the deployment of tens of thousands of reserve troops.
Israel aims to weaken Hamas, secure the release of hostages, and pressure the group into accepting a ceasefire on Israeli terms. The plan includes ground operations to capture Gaza territory and strike Hamas targets. Officials say troops will carry out these steps in phases.
Military leaders also plan to block Hamas from distributing humanitarian aid, arguing that the group uses supplies to strengthen its control.
The conflict has already displaced large numbers of Palestinians. Since the truce fell apart in mid-March, Israeli forces have killed hundreds and now control about half of Gaza.
Even before that, Israel stopped all humanitarian aid to Gaza—including food, fuel, and water. Aid agencies now warn of the worst crisis since the conflict began 19 months ago.
Israeli officials are discussing a relocation plan tied to former U.S. President Donald Trump. The proposal would move Gaza’s population under what Israel calls “voluntary emigration.” Many nations in Europe and the Arab world have condemned this idea.
Despite intense military pressure, Hamas has not changed its negotiating position. Mediators have made little progress toward a new ceasefire.
Israel insists it will not end the war until it defeats Hamas. Meanwhile, Hamas demands a truce that includes a path to end the war entirely.
Outlook
Israel’s latest plan marks a major shift. It commits the country to a long-term presence in Gaza, raising concerns globally and pushing peace efforts further out of reach.
