Israel Launches Largest Attack on Syria, Heavy Bombing Near Presidential Palace

The Israeli military has confirmed targeting a military headquarters entrance in Damascus and a military outpost near the presidential palace. According to a Syrian source, these attacks killed five members of the Syrian security forces.

Escalation in Syria After Gaza and Iran

After operations in Gaza and Iran, Israel has now carried out a deadly strike on Syria. On Wednesday, the Syrian capital, Damascus, was hit by severe airstrikes that destroyed part of the defense ministry building. Israel also bombed areas near the presidential palace. Following these attacks, Israel explicitly stated that it would not tolerate assaults on the Druze community in southern Syria.

This is being considered Israel’s largest military action yet against the interim Syrian government led by President Ahmed Al-Shara. In recent months, Syria had attempted to improve relations with the U.S. and Israel.

Israel Accuses Syria of Failing to Protect Minorities

Israel accused the Syrian government of failing to protect the Druze minority in southern regions, alleging that state forces were involved in attacks. Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir stated, “We will not allow southern Syria to become a hub for terrorism.”

The Israeli military confirmed striking a military headquarters entrance in Damascus and a base near the presidential palace. Syrian sources reported that five security personnel were killed in the attacks.

International Reactions

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio commented on the situation, stating that Washington had contacted all parties involved and hoped for an end to the conflict by tonight. Meanwhile, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) will hold an emergency meeting on Thursday regarding the Syria crisis.

Israel’s UN Ambassador Danny Danon said, “The brutal crimes committed against innocent civilians on Syrian soil must be condemned.”

Recent Violence in Southern Syria

In recent days, violent clashes erupted in the southern Syrian city of Sweida, involving Druze fighters, government forces, and Bedouin tribes. Local residents reported being trapped in their homes amid continuous gunfire and explosions. One resident said, “We are trying to keep the children quiet so no one hears us.”

According to the Syrian Network for Human Rights, at least 169 people have been killed in this week’s violence, though security sources estimate the death toll to be around 300.

Druze Crossing into Syria

In Israel, Druze citizens broke through the border fence on Wednesday to enter Syria and assist their brethren. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the military is working to safely bring them back but urged Israeli Druze not to cross the border.
