Chaos erupted in Eastern Indonesia on Thursday morning when extremely powerful earthquake tremors were felt beneath the sea. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the magnitude of this earthquake was measured at 7.4 on the Richter scale.

Key Details of the Earthquake:

  • Epicenter: Near Ternate Island in the Molucca Sea.

  • Depth: Approximately 35 kilometers below the surface.

  • Time: 06:48 AM local time.

The tremors were so intense that they shook the entire region violently.


Tsunami High Alert

Immediately following the quake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center based in Hawaii issued a high alert. The warning states that dangerous tsunami waves could rise within a 1,000-kilometer radius of the earthquake’s epicenter.

In light of this, coastal areas of Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia have been advised to remain extremely vigilant, and residents have been urged to move away from the shores.


Current Situation and Impact

The situation was reported to be particularly tense in Manado city, North Sulawesi province. The powerful jolts woke residents from their sleep, sending them rushing out of their homes in a state of panic. According to eyewitnesses:

  • The tremors lasted for a significant duration.

  • Schoolchildren and the general public poured onto the streets in fear.

Official Status: Local administration and Disaster Management agencies are currently monitoring the situation closely. While there has been no official confirmation of casualties or significant property damage yet, surveillance in coastal areas has been intensified as a precautionary measure.
