India Holds Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 in Abeyance, Cites Pakistan’s Support to Terrorism

Washington DC, April 25, 2025 — In a strong diplomatic signal, the Indian Embassy in Washington DC has issued a formal response to media queries regarding New Delhi’s decision to place the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 in abeyance. The treaty, which was originally signed between India and Pakistan with the spirit of goodwill and friendship, has come under strain in light of ongoing tensions.

In its statement, the embassy said:

“The Indus Water Treaty was concluded by India with Pakistan in a spirit of goodwill and friendship in 1960. Pakistan, through its well-documented, state-sponsored terrorism directed against India, has corroded this spirit. India cannot be expected to continue to cooperate with a country which is responsible for killing innocent civilians.”

The statement comes amid heightened tensions following recent terror incidents and cross-border hostilities. Indian officials argue that sustained cooperation on vital matters like water sharing is untenable while Pakistan allegedly supports activities that threaten Indian civilian lives and national security.

The decision to suspend the treaty is likely to escalate diplomatic strain between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, especially considering the treaty’s significance in managing water resources in the Indus basin.
