In a significant crackdown on the drug network in Punjab, the rural police of Amritsar carried out a major operation on Thursday by demolishing illegal houses belonging to two known drug traffickers. The properties, built on encroached government land in Dharar village under the jurisdiction of Jandiala police station, were razed as part of intensified action against narcotics.
The demolished properties belonged to Jagpreet Singh alias Jagga and Satnam Singh alias Satta, both of whom had unlawfully constructed homes on land designated as a village pond (chhapar). SSP (Rural) Maninder Singh confirmed that both individuals are habitual offenders with multiple cases registered against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Jagpreet has several pending cases related to drug smuggling, while Satnam faces trial in four NDPS-related matters. Both are currently in judicial custody.
This marks the fifth such demolition drive by the Amritsar Rural Police targeting drug traffickers’ illegal assets. SSP Singh emphasized that the police are no longer limiting their actions to arrests alone. Authorities are actively identifying, investigating, and seizing properties acquired through drug-related proceeds.
The police are also extending their inquiry to uncover additional assets amassed by the two peddlers through the drug trade. “We are in the process of identifying more properties owned by Jagga and Satta. Once verified, strict legal action will follow,” SSP Maninder Singh stated.
Highlighting a broader positive trend, the SSP also noted an encouraging shift among local youth, many of whom are now voluntarily enrolling in drug rehabilitation programs. “This is a sign of growing awareness and change,” he added.
Since the beginning of the intensified anti-drug campaign, the Amritsar Rural Police have registered over 50 cases under the Excise Act, underscoring their ongoing commitment to tackling the drug menace across the region.
