Heavy Rains Disrupt Life from Delhi to Punjab: Schools and Colleges Shut in Several States on August 26
Severe rainfall and flood-like conditions across multiple states have disrupted normal life, forcing administrations to shut down educational institutions as a precaution. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued fresh warnings for heavy rainfall in several regions on August 26, 2025.
Rajasthan remains one of the worst-affected states. Continuous downpours have left Jaipur and many other areas waterlogged. With IMD predicting more heavy rain today, authorities have declared a holiday for schools and colleges across 20 districts.
In Punjab, heavy showers continue to lash parts of the state. The administrations of Pathankot, Fazilka, Bathinda, and Hoshiarpur districts have announced the closure of all government and private schools for the day to ensure student safety.
Himachal Pradesh has been placed under a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall. Districts including Chamba, Kangra, Mandi, Kullu, Hamirpur, Una, and Bilaspur are on high alert. The government has ordered all schools and colleges in Shimla, Mandi, Manali, Una, and Bilaspur to remain closed on August 26.
Meanwhile, landslides and flooding have damaged stretches of National Highway-3 (Chandigarh-Manali Road) between Mandi and Kullu, leaving several vehicles stranded and disrupting connectivity.
In Delhi and the National Capital Region (Noida and Greater Noida), a yellow alert has been issued for thunderstorms and heavy showers. The IMD has indicated that rainfall may continue for the next two days. However, there has been no announcement of school closures in Delhi so far.
The IMD has also issued weather alerts in several other regions:
Orange Alert (very heavy rain): Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana
Yellow Alert (heavy rain): Uttarakhand, Bihar, Assam, Meghalaya, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, coastal Andhra Pradesh, central Maharashtra, Arunachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Konkan, and Goa
While the rains have brought some relief from summer heat, they have also triggered flooding, road blockages, and widespread disruption from Uttar Pradesh to Himachal Pradesh. Authorities are urging residents in vulnerable districts to stay alert and follow safety advisories.
