Heavy Rains Cause Havoc in Rajasthan, Surwal Dam Overflows
Sawai Madhopur, Rajasthan: Continuous heavy rainfall has severely disrupted life in several parts of Rajasthan, with Sawai Madhopur district’s Jadavata village among the worst affected. The situation turned critical after the Surwal Dam overflowed, releasing a strong current of water that carved out a massive trench nearly 2 km long, 100 feet wide, and 55 feet deep through the middle of the village.
The powerful flow destroyed two houses, two shops, and two temples, leaving locals devastated.
Kirodi Lal, a resident of Jadavata, told NDTV, “I built this house while working abroad. Now, four bighas of my land have sunk into a pit. My family is in distress, and we haven’t cooked food for three days.” Villagers said their crops were completely destroyed, fodder for animals has run out, and food supplies are nearing exhaustion.
Apart from Jadavata, many villages in Chauth ka Barwara tehsil are also facing flood-like conditions. Fields and houses in the Surwal area have been submerged. The Galwa River overflowed into multiple villages, trapping families on rooftops for the past two days without adequate food and drinking water. Locals complained that they have not yet received sufficient government aid.
Given the gravity of the situation, the Army and SDRF teams have been deployed, and nearby houses evacuated. Authorities and villagers are trying to prevent further soil erosion, but the strong current is making it nearly impossible.
State minister and local MLA Kirodi Lal Meena visited the affected areas, directing officials to deploy machinery for water diversion. He expressed anger at officials’ negligence, stating that timely action could have reduced the damage.
The heavy rains and dam overflow have left many families stranded, farmlands destroyed, and infrastructure damaged, turning the region into a humanitarian crisis.
