Heavy Rainfall Alert in Punjab Today: Full Weather Forecast for July 23

Chandigarh, July 23 – The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for parts of Punjab today, warning of moderate to heavy rainfall, accompanied by lightning and strong winds reaching speeds of 30–40 km/h in several regions.

As of 8:30 AM today, intermittent showers with possible lightning strikes and gusty winds are expected in areas such as Lehra, Sunam, Sangrur, Barnala, Dhuri, Ferozepur, Zira, Patti, Tarn Taran, and Amritsar.

Widespread Light Rain Across Several Areas

Other regions including Budhlada, Malerkotla, Moonak, Patran, Muktsar Sahib, Jalalabad, Bagha Purana, Faridkot, Moga, Shahkot, Sultanpur Lodhi, Khadoor Sahib, Amritsar I, and Ajnala are likely to witness light rainfall throughout the day.

The IMD has predicted moderate to heavy rain in four districtsPathankot, Hoshiarpur, Rupnagar, and Mohali, especially those adjoining Himachal Pradesh. These regions have a 75% to 100% probability of receiving significant rainfall today.

Rain Probability Across Punjab

In addition to the four high-alert districts, seven other districts are likely to experience light to moderate rainfall with a 50% to 75% chance. These include:

  • Gurdaspur

  • Kapurthala

  • Jalandhar

  • Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar (Nawanshahr)

  • Ludhiana

  • Fatehgarh Sahib

  • Patiala

Some areas in Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, Moga, Barnala, Sangrur, and Mansa also have 25% to 50% probability of light to moderate showers. Further south and southwest, Faridkot, Fazilka, Muktsar, and Bathinda may see light rain in scattered areas, with a 25% chance of rainfall.

Three-Day Rain Forecast

  • July 24: Moderate rain expected in Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Tarn Taran, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Rupnagar, Mohali, Fatehgarh Sahib, and Patiala, covering around 25–50% of these regions.

  • July 25: Scattered moderate showers are likely in Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Rupnagar, and Mohali.

  • July 26: Light to moderate rainfall expected in isolated parts of Punjab.

Rainfall Recorded on July 22

Significant rainfall was recorded in several districts of Punjab yesterday:

  • Pathankot: 50.0 mm

  • Ludhiana: 31.0 mm

  • Fazilka: 10.5 mm

  • Ferozepur: 4.0 mm

  • Hoshiarpur: 6.0 mm

  • Mohali: 2.0 mm

  • Fatehgarh Sahib: 9.0 mm

Outlook Ahead

According to the weather office, similar weather conditions are expected to continue over the next few days. Residents are advised to stay updated with IMD alerts, especially in flood-prone and low-lying areas.
