Heavy Rain Warning in Haryana: All Floodgates of Hathnikund Barrage Opened

Chandigarh, September 1, 2025 – The Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall warning across Haryana until 8:30 AM on Tuesday, prompting the state government to declare a high alert. Chief Minister Nayab Saini has canceled his planned UAE visit and is expected to hold an emergency meeting on the rain situation today. All health officials and staff leaves have been canceled.

Record Water Release at Hathnikund Barrage

At 2 AM on Monday, inflow at Hathnikund Barrage in Yamunanagar touched 1.05 lakh cusecs, forcing authorities to open all floodgates. By 9 AM, the water level surged to 3.29 lakh cusecs, the highest this season. Sirens were sounded, and residents along the Yamuna river were warned to stay away. Delhi authorities have also been put on alert as low-lying areas could face flooding.

Local Flooding and Damage

  • Sirsa: Two house walls collapsed late at night, leaving one minor injured; 50 acres of crops were submerged. In Dabwali, water from the Ghaggar river is flowing toward Rajasthan.

  • Kaithal: In Songal village, floodwaters entered homes.

  • Narnaul: A private school was inundated.

  • Hisar: At Balsamand, a breach in the Basda canal flooded nearly 100 acres of farmland, damaging crops already weakened by continuous rains.

In some cases, families narrowly escaped tragedy—such as in Risalia Khera and Pakka villages in Sirsa, where collapsing walls fell outward, sparing sleeping residents.

River Situation in Haryana

  • Yamuna: Danger alerts issued for Yamunanagar, Karnal, Panipat, Sonipat, and Faridabad. Villages on riverbanks have been cautioned not to graze cattle near the waters.

  • Markanda River (Kurukshetra): Currently flowing just one meter below the danger mark at Shahabad, with inflows of 18,000 cusecs. SDRF teams have been deployed. Forecasts warn inflow could rise to 28,000–34,000 cusecs due to rain in Himachal Pradesh.

  • Tangri River (Ambala): Carrying 10,000 cusecs, near capacity. Three days ago, it swelled to 36,000 cusecs, flooding 17 colonies. Authorities fear similar surges if heavy rainfall continues.

  • Ghaggar River: Flowing at danger levels for the past two days, affecting Panchkula, Sirsa, Fatehabad, and Kaithal. In Cheeka, Kaithal, water depth is 21 feet, close to the danger mark of 23 feet. In Fatehabad’s Chandpura, the Ghaggar siphon currently carries 12,500 cusecs, against a 22,000 cusec capacity.

Government and Administrative Measures

  • Evacuation alerts have been issued in flood-prone villages.

  • SDRF and local administration are conducting site visits and readiness checks.

  • Residents have been advised to avoid riverbanks and prepare for possible evacuations.

With continued heavy rainfall forecast, authorities fear further rise in river levels, making the next 48 hours extremely critical for Haryana and downstream regions, including Delhi.
