Punjab is bracing for widespread flooding as heavy rains continue across the region. The state government and weather department have issued a yellow alert, warning of severe rainfall and rising river levels in six districts.
The Meteorological Department has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall on Tuesday in areas adjoining Himachal Pradesh. Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, and Rupnagar have been placed under high alert, while other districts are likely to see light to moderate showers.
In Jammu and Kashmir, torrential rains have pushed up the water level of the Ravi River, which has now inundated several border areas of Pathankot. Villages in the district are under two to three feet of water. Similarly, the Beas River in Himachal Pradesh has swollen dangerously, adding to Punjab’s flooding crisis.
Flood-like conditions have gripped Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Sultanpur Lodhi, and Tarn Taran. In Fazilka, the Sutlej River has caused serious problems for residents, while rising waters at Harike Headworks in Tarn Taran have submerged nearby villages.
Sultanpur Lodhi faces worsening conditions, with several villages cut off. Relief operations are underway, and Khalsa Aid has taken charge of rescue missions. The NGO is helping evacuate stranded animals and extend aid to affected families.
Authorities are keeping a close watch on water levels in Punjab’s rivers. Disaster response teams, along with volunteer groups, remain on high alert to prevent further damage. Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to stay vigilant as the situation may intensify if rainfall continues.
