As extreme temperatures gripped Punjab, nine districts recorded over 40°C on Sunday, with Bathinda emerging as the hottest city at a scorching 45.3°C—the highest so far this season. Despite a slight dip of 1°C in the last 24 hours, the temperature still remains 1.8°C above the seasonal average.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), relief from the heatwave is expected starting today, with a yellow alert issued across 11 districts including Pathankot, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Rupnagar, Mohali, Fatehgarh Sahib, Nawanshahr, and Patiala. These areas are likely to experience thunderstorms, gusty winds, and intermittent rain over the next few days.
The IMD has issued a yellow alert across various districts until May 24, warning of dust storms, lightning, and strong winds. Bathinda, Faridkot, Fazilka, and Mansa are particularly at risk on May 22, with severe weather activity predicted.
