Haryana ADGP Puran Kumar Dies by Suicide; Leaves Behind 8-Page Note and Will

Haryana’s Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Y. Puran Kumar died by suicide on October 7, triggering shockwaves across the state’s administrative and police circles. The senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer reportedly shot himself at his residence in Sector 11, Chandigarh, leaving behind an eight-page handwritten note and a will.

The Incident

According to police sources, the ADGP had directed his security personnel to leave the premises before the incident. He then went to a room in the basement of his house, sat on a chair, and shot himself. Neighbors alerted the police after hearing the gunshot, and a team rushed to the spot. His body was recovered from inside the house.

A forensic team from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) was immediately called in to examine the crime scene. Authorities confirmed that a detailed investigation is underway, and post-mortem will be conducted by a board of doctors on October 8, after his wife returns from an official foreign visit.

The Suicide Note and Will

Police said that an eight-page note and a will were recovered from the officer’s possession. The note reportedly mentions professional stress, workplace-related problems, dissatisfaction, and mental strain. While the content has not yet been officially disclosed, sources indicate that the officer expressed anger and frustration over job-related challenges and ongoing disputes.

Notably, Puran Kumar had been transferred on September 29, but was on leave at the time of his death. His leave was scheduled to end soon, which may have added to his distress, according to initial reports.

Family and Personal Background

ADGP Puran Kumar’s wife is a senior IAS officer and is currently part of the delegation accompanying Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on an official visit to Japan. The couple, both highly respected in state service, had served in several important positions over the years.

The officer is survived by his wife, two daughters, and his mother. His elder daughter is studying in the United States, while his younger daughter resides in Chandigarh.

Official Response

Chandigarh Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) confirmed that the department received reports of a gunshot from the Sector 11 police station. Following this, a team reached the location and recovered the ADGP’s body. Authorities are waiting for post-mortem findings before making further statements.

The sudden death of ADGP Puran Kumar has raised serious concerns about stress and mental health issues among senior police officers. The state government and police department are expected to issue statements after the post-mortem report and a review of the recovered note.
