Young Men Swept Away While Trying to Deliver Water to Flood-Trapped Friend’s Family in Gurdaspur

One missing, another rescued from rooftop amid rising waters

Gurdaspur, August 29: A rescue attempt turned tragic in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district when a group of young men tried to help their friend’s family, who were stranded in floodwaters. While delivering water to the family in Rahimabad village, one youth was swept away by the strong current, while another managed to save himself by clinging to a structure and climbing onto the roof of a nearby house.

The incident, which occurred late Thursday evening, was captured on video and quickly went viral. Following the circulation of the footage, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local police rushed to the spot and launched rescue efforts.

According to reports, six youths from Kalanour set out to deliver water to their stranded friend’s family in Rahimabad. However, unfamiliar with the flooded routes, they mistakenly entered the overflowing Kiran Canal. The powerful current dragged them away, leading to the accident.

As of the latest updates, Viney Kumar of Kalanour remains missing, while his companion Amrinder was rescued safely. NDRF teams have been carrying out an extensive search operation to trace the missing youth.

The authorities have urged locals to avoid venturing into flood-hit areas without guidance, warning that rapidly changing water levels and strong undercurrents pose serious risks.
