Former Trump Lawyer Ty Cobb Claims Comey Indictment Hides President’s ‘Criminal’ Past

Ty Cobb, a former senior White House lawyer, has fiercely criticized the indictment of ex-FBI Director James Comey, stating the move is a “wholly unconstitutional” and “authoritarian” attempt by Donald Trump to “rewrite history” and distract from his own criminal record.

Speaking on CBS’s Face the Nation, Cobb, who previously served as a liaison to special counsel Robert Mueller, warned that the indictment signals a coming wave of political retribution against the President’s perceived opponents.

Aiming to Conceal the Truth

Cobb argued that the primary motive behind the case is to revise the historical narrative: “Trump wants to rewrite history so that the next generation may not know that he incited a violent insurrection… refused to peacefully transfer the power… stole classified documents… and that he was a criminal.” He stressed that anyone involved in past events that “offended him” is now “in real danger.”

Comey Case: A ‘Flawed’ Prosecution

Despite the political aims, Cobb believes the case against Comey—for allegedly lying to Congress—is fundamentally weak and likely to fail. He noted that the grand jury rejected the top charge and narrowly approved two others, even under the low threshold of probable cause. Cobb concluded there is “no way in the world that Comey will be convicted,” and suggested the case could be tossed out pre-trial due to the politically motivated and “authoritarian” manner in which it was pursued.

Cobb also took aim at Attorney General Pam Bondi, accusing her of “wholly abandon[ing]” the Justice Department’s principles to pursue the President’s personal bidding.

FBI Director Contradicts Trump’s Claim

In a separate development, Trump’s appointed FBI Director, Kash Patel, reportedly contradicted a claim made by the President on social media. Patel stated that FBI agents at the 2021 US Capitol attack were only deployed after the mob breached the building, pushing back against Trump’s insinuation that hundreds of agents were planted among the pro-Trump crowd.
