Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro Sentenced to 27 Years in Prison for Alleged Coup Plot
Brazil’s Supreme Court has delivered a major verdict, sentencing former President Jair Bolsonaro to 27 years in prison. Bolsonaro, considered a close ally of former U.S. President Donald Trump, was found guilty of attempting to overthrow the government.
According to the court, Bolsonaro conspired to remove his successor, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, following the 2022 elections. The allegations include planning a coup to stay in power despite losing the democratic mandate.
Bolsonaro’s defense team decided not to file a final appeal, and therefore Judge Alexandre de Moraes declared the verdict final. With this decision, all avenues for further appeal have been closed, and the full 27-year sentence will stand.
The ruling marks a historic moment in Brazil, as it is one of the most severe sentences ever handed to a former head of state for attempting to undermine democratic institutions.
