Flash floods in Himachal Mandi disrupt highway traffic

Mandi (Himachal Pradesh), August 17, 2025 – Flash floods in Himachal Mandi have severely affected traffic on the Chandigarh–Manali National Highway, with several stretches blocked due to flooding and landslides. The sudden surge of water struck the areas of Panarsa, Takoli, and Nagwain, cutting off vital road links. Thankfully, no casualties or major property losses have been reported so far.

Continuous Rainfall and Cloudbursts Worsen Conditions

For the past several days, Mandi and its surrounding regions have been battered by continuous heavy rainfall. Cloudbursts in the hills have triggered flash floods, causing mountain rivers to overflow. This has led to frequent landslides, worsening road connectivity and stranding travelers across multiple points.

Recent Incidents Highlight Risks

Just a few days ago, Mandi town was hit by severe rains that buried over 15 vehicles under debris near Jail Road and caused significant damage to nearby homes. Floodwaters even entered residential areas, with Jail Road and Palace Colony witnessing the worst destruction. The Chandigarh–Manali Highway had to be shut down after massive landslides struck Wada, Jhalogi, and other sections. Similarly, the Pathankot–Mandi route was also blocked at several locations due to falling debris.

Current Situation

Local authorities have deployed emergency teams to monitor the situation and carry out clearance operations. Travelers have been urged to avoid unnecessary movement on the highway as heavy rain is likely to continue in the region. Disaster management officials are on high alert to tackle any further landslides or flooding.
