This is truly a very sad piece of news. Dr. Jaswinder Bhalla, one of the most celebrated Punjabi comedians, passed away at the age of 65. He reportedly suffered a brain stroke late last night and was admitted to a private hospital in Mohali, where his health deteriorated further. He breathed his last around 4 a.m. this morning.
Born: May 4, 1960, Doraha (Ludhiana), Punjab
Comedy Debut: 1988 with Chhankata 88, which made him a household name
Film Career: Started with Dulla Bhatti, went on to star in numerous hit Punjabi films as a comedy icon
Academic Career: Professor at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) and also its brand ambassador
Family: Resided in Mohali with his family; son lives with him, while his daughter (currently in Europe) is returning today to perform the last rites
Revolutionized Punjabi comedy by blending humor with real-life village and urban situations.
Brought joy through stage shows, films, and comedy albums that became hugely popular across Punjab and among the diaspora.
As a professor, he played a significant role in spreading agricultural awareness among farmers.
His funeral will be held tomorrow, August 23, at 1 p.m. in Mohali.
His close friend Bal Mukund Sharma said, “This loss can never be filled. We were together for 40 years—he treated me like a brother.”
Punjabi film industry members called him the “Patriarch of Punjabi Cinema Comedy.”
The Punjab Congress expressed grief, saying his death is an “irreparable loss” to Punjabi culture and cinema.
