Erin Patterson’s Financial Dispute Revealed in Mushroom Murders Trial

Inflammatory messages exchanged between estranged couple

The mushroom murders trial has taken a dramatic turn as Erin Patterson’s financial dispute with her estranged husband, Simon, was discussed in court. The Victorian Supreme Court heard about “extremely aggressive” exchanges between the couple during their ongoing dispute. Patterson, 50, faces charges related to a deadly lunch she served in July 2023, which allegedly contained poisonous mushrooms.

Aggressive exchanges and escalating tensions

Simon Patterson testified for a second day on Friday, providing insight into a series of text messages exchanged between him and Erin. He recounted how the communication became increasingly emotive and hostile. Simon recalled messages where Erin contacted his parents about financial matters, and Simon agreed with his lawyer that these exchanges became “inflammatory.”

He also described how tensions heightened during a dispute regarding child support, which saw Erin sending angry messages about their children’s financial future. This conflict escalated, with Simon noting that his estranged wife became “extremely aggressive” in her approach. Simon even sought mediation in an attempt to resolve the ongoing conflict.

Flashpoint over birthday lunch and routine messages

Another flashpoint in their relationship occurred over the arrangement of a lunch for Simon’s mother’s 70th birthday. Messages from October 2022 revealed that Erin felt hurt by what she perceived as being invited as an “afterthought.” This led to further tension, with Erin expressing frustration at Simon’s response, calling her concerns “ridiculous.”

Many of the texts discussed routine family matters, such as parenting arrangements and church-related tasks, but the financial disputes remained a core issue. Simon regularly managed the live feed at Korumburra Baptist Church, while Erin helped ensure its proper online operation.

Trial continues with new revelations

Justice Christopher Beale instructed the jury to avoid media discussions over the weekend and remain focused on the case. Simon’s testimony will continue on Monday, and the trial remains ongoing as more details emerge.
