Earthquakes Shake Two Countries as Strong Tremors Hit Bay of Bengal and Tasmania

Earthquakes shake two countries late last night as powerful tremors were recorded in India’s Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Australia’s Tasmania, and the Bay of Bengal region. The quakes, each measuring over 6.0 on the Richter scale, struck after midnight. Fortunately, no casualties or significant damage have been reported so far.

According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS) in India and Germany’s GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences, a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 struck the Bay of Bengal at 12:41 AM IST. The quake’s epicenter was located near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). Despite the strength of the tremor, authorities have confirmed that there is no tsunami threat, and no major losses have occurred.

Tremors in India and Australia

In Tasmania, Australia, another significant quake occurred around 3:40 AM local time, registering 6.7 on the Richter scale. Residents experienced intense shaking, but there are no reports of injuries or structural damage.

Earlier in the night, at 8:55 PM, a separate quake of 5.0 magnitude was recorded off the coast of Nicaragua in the North Pacific Ocean. Around the same time, eastern Russia also experienced seismic activity, with a 5.1 magnitude quake striking 138 km east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

Frequent Earthquakes in July Raise Concerns in India

The recent quake near Andaman adds to a growing list of tremors felt across India in July 2025. On July 10 and 11, mild earthquakes shook the Delhi-NCR region, with magnitudes exceeding 4.0. The epicenter was located in Jhajjar district, Haryana. Though the tremors created panic, especially during ongoing monsoon showers, no injuries or damage were reported.

On July 11, another quake measuring 3.7 struck Jhajjar, followed by a 3.2 magnitude quake in Faridabad on July 22. The latter had its epicenter 5 kilometers below the surface. While none of these incidents caused damage, the increasing frequency of seismic events is raising public concern.

Authorities in all affected regions are monitoring the situation and urging residents to remain alert. Experts continue to study seismic patterns amid growing awareness of earthquake preparedness.
