Islamabad : An earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale struck Pakistan on Monday, May 12, at 1:26 PM. According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the epicenter was located in the Balochistan region near the Afghanistan border, at coordinates 29.12°N latitude and 67.26°E longitude, with a depth of 10 kilometers.

Affected Areas and Impact

As per the map shared by NCS, the earthquake’s impact was felt in areas including Quetta, Chaman, and Sibi. Despite the noticeable tremors, there have been no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

This marks the second earthquake to hit the region in recent days. On May 9, a 4.0 magnitude quake was also reported in Balochistan. Experts note that Pakistan is situated in a seismically active zone due to its position at the junction of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. Regions like Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan lie on the southern edge of the Eurasian plate, while Punjab and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir are on the northwestern edge of the Indian plate.

Because this quake occurred at a shallow depth of just 10 km, its tremors were more strongly felt at the surface. Shallow quakes often cause more noticeable shaking as the seismic waves travel a shorter distance to the ground.
