Earthquake of Magnitude 6.3 Strikes Afghanistan, 9 Killed; Tremors Felt in Delhi-NCR

Kabul/New Delhi, September 1, 2025 – A powerful earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale struck southeastern Afghanistan late Sunday night, leaving at least nine people dead and several others injured. The tremors were so strong that they were felt across Pakistan and as far away as India’s Delhi-NCR region, causing panic among residents.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the quake was located in Afghanistan’s southeastern region. The strong seismic activity shook large parts of the country, resulting in significant destruction. Reuters reported that the quake caused widespread damage to homes and infrastructure in affected areas.

Confirming the casualties, Najeebullah Rahimi, spokesperson for Nangarhar’s Public Health Department, told Reuters that at least nine people lost their lives, while 15 others sustained injuries. All the injured have been rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The tremors rattled Pakistan as well, with residents in major cities feeling the impact. In India, people in Delhi and adjoining areas rushed out of their homes in fear as buildings swayed for several seconds.

Earthquakes are common in this region due to its location on multiple fault lines, making it highly vulnerable to seismic activity. Authorities in Afghanistan have launched relief operations, while local hospitals continue to treat those injured in the disaster.
