Donald Trump “Prevented Devastation”: Why Shehbaz Sharif Says He Nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize

Islamabad | 29 September 2025
In a surprising and controversial announcement, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has claimed that his government officially nominated former U.S. President Donald Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, crediting him with averting a full-scale war between India and Pakistan earlier this year.

🕊️ Trump “Stopped a War” – Sharif’s Justification

Sharif stated that Trump’s “decisive diplomatic intervention” during the May 2025 military standoff between India and Pakistan was crucial in preventing widespread destruction. According to the Pakistani government, Trump played a behind-the-scenes role in de-escalating tensions, following a hotline conversation between Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) and his Indian counterpart, which led to a ceasefire agreement.

Sharif claimed,

“A major catastrophe was avoided. President Trump acted at a time when tensions were at a breaking point. For that, he deserves global recognition.”

🇵🇰 Pakistan’s Strategy: Bringing in a Third Party

Observers see Pakistan’s Nobel nomination of Trump as part of an effort to bring international attention to what it portrays as a diplomatic success story, while also attempting to shift focus away from its own vulnerabilities during the conflict. The formal nomination was made by Pakistan’s government in June 2025, and publicly announced on 21 June.

🇮🇳 India’s Firm Rebuttal: “No U.S. Involvement”

India has strongly denied any role played by the U.S. in the ceasefire process.

  • On 10 May 2025, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri clarified that the ceasefire was initiated solely between India and Pakistan, and there was “no involvement of any third party.”

  • Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, on 28 July, further emphasized that the ceasefire came after achieving all strategic objectives, rejecting suggestions of foreign pressure.

“India’s actions were guided by national interest, not outside influence,” Singh had said.

🧨 Background: The Operation and Rising Tensions

In May 2025, tensions between India and Pakistan reached dangerous levels following Operation Sindoor, a major Indian military response to cross-border provocations. The situation nearly spiraled into a broader conflict, but eventually led to direct military-level communication through the DGMO hotline.

While Pakistan credits Trump’s intervention for the de-escalation, India has consistently stated it was a bilateral decision, rooted in mutual military and diplomatic calculations.

🔍 Why the Nobel Nod is Controversial

Trump’s nomination has sparked debate both within Pakistan and internationally—especially given his controversial foreign policy legacy and recent U.S. military actions in Iran. Critics argue that nominating Trump for a peace prize is ironic at best and politically motivated at worst.

Still, high-level meetings between Trump and Pakistan’s Army Chief Asim Munir during June 2025 have deepened U.S.-Pakistan ties, particularly in defense cooperation. Some analysts suggest that Pakistan may be leveraging Trump’s global image to boost its own diplomatic profile.

📌 In Summary:

  • Trump nominated for 2026 Nobel Peace Prize by Pakistan.

  • Shehbaz Sharif says Trump helped prevent war with India.

  • India denies any U.S. mediation, asserting ceasefire was bilateral.

  • Political motivations behind the nomination remain hotly debated.
