In a shocking incident, a junior resident doctor at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh was assaulted by the relatives of a patient on Thursday. The incident took place in the Neonatology ICU (NNN-ICU) during the day.
The altercation began when the mother of a newborn accused the doctor of leaving bruise marks on the baby’s neck during treatment. According to Dr. Siddharth Chakravarty, the woman first threatened him, then called her family members, who proceeded to slap, kick, and assault him.
The assailants even tried to drag the doctor out of the ICU by his collar. Dr. Chakravarty somehow managed to escape and ran back inside the ICU to save himself.
As soon as the incident was reported, the PGI security team and police reached the spot. The injured doctor was sent to a government hospital for medical examination. Based on his complaint, a case has been registered against the mother and unidentified relatives of the patient. The investigation is ongoing.
The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at PGIMER strongly condemned the incident. ARD President Dr. Vishnu Jinja said that ensuring the safety of doctors in hospitals is of utmost importance. He demanded strict action against the attackers and called for improved security arrangements within the institute.
The PGI administration has ordered a review of the incident and existing security protocols. Officials emphasized the need to prevent such attacks in the future and ensure a safe working environment for healthcare professionals.
