Delhi Government Announces Major Festive Gift: Free LPG Cylinders for Ration Card Holders on Holi and Diwali

New Delhi, February 4, 2026: The BJP-led Delhi government has made a significant announcement to support economically weaker families. Under Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the administration has approved a scheme to provide free LPG cylinders to ration card holders during Holi and Diwali festivals. This decision will bring major relief from inflation to lakhs of families in Delhi.

Who Qualifies and How Will Benefits Be Delivered?

The scheme extends to all ration card holders in Delhi. Key features include:

  • Financial Assistance: Cylinder subsidy will be transferred directly to beneficiaries’ bank accounts via DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer).

  • Non-Ujjwala Holders: Those without Ujjwala connections will receive ₹853 per cylinder.

  • Ujjwala Beneficiaries: After the central government’s ₹300 subsidy, these families get ₹553 per cylinder.

  • PNG Users: Households with piped natural gas (PNG) connections are also covered.

Government’s Rationale and Budget

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated the scheme will launch in 2026, aiming to provide financial strength during festive seasons. Delhi BJP chief Virender Sachdeva revealed a ₹242 crore fund has been allocated for this initiative, fulfilling election promises.

Notably, Uttar Pradesh’s Yogi Adityanath government already runs a similar program offering free cylinders. While opposition parties (AAP and Congress) criticize the move, the government claims it’s part of a transparent and accountable welfare policy.
