Death of Robert Mueller: Donald Trump’s Controversial Remarks and the Roots of an Old Rivalry

Washington | March 22, 2026

Robert Mueller III, the former Director of the FBI and Special Counsel, has passed away at the age of 81. While he is being remembered in American history as an influential official who modernized the FBI following the 9/11 attacks, President Donald Trump has ignited a fresh controversy with a sharp and celebratory comment regarding his death.

The Core of Trump’s Resentment: The Mueller Investigation (2017–2019)

The enmity between Trump and Mueller centered on the investigation Mueller conducted as Special Counsel into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. elections. The primary reasons behind Trump’s animosity include:

  • Investigation into Russian Collusion: Mueller was tasked with determining if there was any secret coordination between the Trump campaign and Russia. Trump consistently labeled this probe a “Witch Hunt” and a “Hoax.”

  • Obstruction of Justice: The Mueller Report, released in April 2019, stated that while it did not establish a criminal conspiracy between Trump and Russia, it also did not “exonerate” him. The report highlighted several instances where Trump allegedly attempted to obstruct the investigation.

  • Convictions and Sentences: Mueller’s investigation resulted in the indictment and conviction of several people, including many of Trump’s close associates—actions Trump viewed as an attempt to destabilize his administration.

Mueller’s Legacy vs. Trump’s Reaction

Robert Mueller served as the head of the FBI for 12 consecutive years, from 2001 to 2013, and was respected by both Republicans and Democrats. However, Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, writing:

“Robert Mueller is dead. Good, I’m glad… Now he can’t hurt innocent people anymore!”

While Trump’s supporters have praised his remarks, critics have slammed the comment as “uncivilized” and “disgusting” toward a deceased public servant. Throughout his life, Mueller maintained that his work and the report spoke for themselves, whereas Trump continued to view the entire ordeal as a “Deep State Conspiracy” against him.
