Cyclone Montha Turns Dangerous: IMD Issues Updated Rainfall Forecast Across Multiple States

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued its latest weather forecast regarding Cyclone Montha, warning of continued heavy rainfall in parts of India even as the system weakens. According to the IMD’s latest bulletin, rainfall intensity will decrease over most parts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana on Thursday (October 30), though isolated areas in both states are still expected to receive heavy showers.

Cyclone Montha Weakens into a Depression

The IMD confirmed that the severe cyclonic storm “Montha” has now weakened into a depression. On October 29, very heavy rainfall was recorded at isolated places in Telangana, while coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, Vidarbha, and Marathwada experienced widespread heavy downpours.

According to meteorologists, the remnant deep depression of Cyclone Montha, which formed over northern Andhra Pradesh, southern Odisha, southern Chhattisgarh, and adjoining northeastern Telangana, moved north-northwestwards at about 18 kmph during the last six hours. By 5:30 PM (IST) on October 29, it was centered over southern Chhattisgarh and nearby regions. The system is likely to continue moving northwards and weaken into a low-pressure area within the next 12 hours.

Rainfall Forecast for October 30

The IMD forecast suggests that rainfall intensity will reduce across most parts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, but heavy rain is still expected in a few pockets. Chhattisgarh is also expected to receive light to moderate rainfall, with some areas likely to see heavy rainfall.

Between now and November 2, Gangetic West Bengal, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Jharkhand, and Bihar will experience light to moderate rain, with heavy rainfall in isolated locations.

Heavy Rainfall Recorded in the Past 24 Hours

During the past 24 hours, Mongolo Station in coastal Andhra Pradesh recorded an extremely heavy rainfall of 25 cm. Heavy to very heavy rain was also reported in Marathwada, Telangana, Odisha, and Rayalaseema, while western Rajasthan, interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Bengal, and Bihar saw heavy showers as well.
