Chill Grip Tightens: Punjab & Chandigarh Brace for Cold Wave, Fog, and Incoming Rain
Punjab and Chandigarh are still reeling under relentless cold weather. The Meteorological Department has extended a ‘yellow alert’ for cold wave and dense fog today (January 29). Amritsar logged the state’s lowest temperature at 3.7°C, making it the chilliest city.
Dense fog blanketed the region this morning, slashing visibility and snarling traffic. Chandigarh saw visibility drop to just 40 meters, Bathinda to 50 meters, and Ludhiana to 190 meters. Drivers faced major hurdles on roads due to these hazardous conditions.
The weather office warned of cold wave conditions in districts like Ferozepur, Muktsar, Bathinda, and Mansa. Night temperatures could plunge another 2-4°C over the next two days, amplifying the freeze.
A fresh Western Disturbance activates from the night of January 30, promising relief with showers:
January 31: Light rain likely in Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, and Rupnagar areas.
February 1: Weather turns active across Punjab and Chandigarh, with moderate rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds up to 30-40 km/h at many spots.
February 2: Scattered showers may persist in parts of the state, followed by a gradual temperature rise.
The department urges caution: Drive carefully in fog and avoid unnecessary travel during bad weather.
