Bushra Bibi Endures Torture in Adiala Jail: UN Report Exposes Dire Conditions

Rawalpindi, Pakistan – December 26, 2025
Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, faces severe torture in Adiala Jail, according to a United Nations report. She has been sentenced to 17 years in prison and held in appalling conditions that threaten her physical and mental health.

Harsh Jail Conditions Revealed

Bushra Bibi is confined to a small, windowless cell infested with rats, insects, and filth. Frequent power outages plunge the room into total darkness, and temperatures soar unbearably. She receives contaminated drinking water and spicy food unfit for consumption. These conditions, allegedly ordered by Army Chief Asim Munir, amount to systematic mistreatment.

UN Report Demands Action

The UN’s report on torture by Special Rapporteur Alice Jill Edwards highlights arrangements to torment Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi. It warns that her detention poses a grave risk to her well-being and urges Pakistan to ensure humane conditions compliant with human dignity standards. The report calls on authorities to protect her health immediately.

17-Year Sentence in Corruption Case

A Rawalpindi special court convicted Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi on December 20 in the Toshakhana-2 corruption case. Both received 17 years of rigorous imprisonment: 10 years under Section 409 of the Trust Act for criminal breach and 7 additional years under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The sentences will run concurrently.

Imran Khan, already jailed, and his wife allegedly misused state gifts. In 2021, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman gifted them Bulgari jewelry worth about 280 million Pakistani rupees (roughly 5.2 million INR). Instead of depositing it in the Toshakhana (state treasury), they bought it cheaply and sold it for personal gain.

Hefty Fine Imposed

Beyond imprisonment, the couple must pay a fine of approximately 5.2 million Pakistani rupees. Failure to do so will extend their jail time.

This case underscores ongoing political tensions surrounding Imran Khan and his allies in Pakistan.
