Burqa On Statue of Liberty? MAGA Meltdown Over Zohran Mamdani’s Historic Primary Win
New York, June 26, 2025 — A political storm is brewing after Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old Democratic Socialist of Indian-Muslim origin, won the Democratic primary for New York City Mayor. If elected, he would become the first Indian-American and first Muslim to hold the prestigious office. However, his victory has provoked an explosive reaction from MAGA supporters and far-right politicians, leading to a surge of Islamophobic rhetoric online.
Among the most inflammatory responses was a digitally altered image of the Statue of Liberty wearing a black burqa, circulated on social media by Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, a longtime Trump ally. Her tweet, captioned “This hits hard,” quickly went viral, igniting fierce debate.
Another conservative figure, Don Keith, echoed the outrage by tweeting the burqa-clad Statue image with the caption: “Congratulations, New York.” South Carolina Representative Nancy Mace also joined in, sharing a photo of Mamdani in traditional kurta pajama attire with the pointed remark: “After 9/11, we said ‘Never Forget.’ I think we sadly have forgotten.”
The backlash intensified online, with many far-right users making alarmist and Islamophobic claims. Posts ranged from accusing Mamdani of being a “jihadist” to predictions that New York would soon be under Sharia law. One user declared, “NYC in 2001: We will never forget! NYC in 2025: Elects Muslim jihadist!” Another wrote, “Doom on those who blindly voted for the city’s downfall.”
Former President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to deliver a blistering attack. “It’s finally happened. The Democrats have crossed the line,” he wrote. “Zohran Mamdani, a 100% Communist Lunatic, has just won the Dem Primary, and is on his way to becoming Mayor.”
Trump didn’t stop there. “He looks TERRIBLE, his voice is grating, he’s not very smart, and he’s backed by AOC+3 — dummies all,” he added. Trump also dragged Senator Chuck Schumer into the mix, mockingly calling him “our Great Palestinian Senator, Cryin’ Chuck Schumer.”
Unfazed by the criticism, Zohran Mamdani responded powerfully during the Democratic mayoral debate: “I am Donald Trump’s worst nightmare — a progressive, Muslim immigrant who fights for what I believe in.” Mamdani has consistently criticized Trump’s immigration policies and the billionaire influence behind his political opponents, especially former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who conceded after Mamdani’s victory.
Mamdani has also voiced strong support for Palestinians and has labeled the ongoing conflict in Gaza a “genocide.” However, he’s clarified that his stance is not anti-Semitic, but a stand for human rights.
Ironically, amid the controversy, historical context resurfaced showing that the original concept for the Statue of Liberty was inspired by a veiled Egyptian woman, envisioned by sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi. The statue was originally planned as a Muslim woman holding a lantern — a symbol of progress — meant for Egypt. When the proposal was rejected, Bartholdi redesigned it as a Roman goddess and gifted it to the United States.
Zohran Mamdani’s primary victory has not only marked a historic milestone but also exposed the deep ideological and cultural divides in America’s political landscape. As the November mayoral election approaches, Mamdani faces both immense public support and intense opposition — making his path to office both groundbreaking and fiercely contested.
