In a brazen attack raising serious security concerns, a car bomb explosion in Moscow has claimed the lives of two traffic police officers. This incident occurred in close proximity to the area where, just two days prior, a Russian Lieutenant General was assassinated in a similar manner.

Details of the Attack

The explosion took place in the early hours between Tuesday and Wednesday, around 1:30 AM local time. According to Russian authorities and media reports, two traffic police officers, Lieutenant Ilya Klimanov (24) and Lieutenant Maksim Gorbunov (25), approached a suspicious individual near his car. An explosive device detonated during the encounter, killing both officers and the suspect.

Gorbunov leaves behind a wife and a nine-month-old daughter. A criminal case has been initiated on charges of attempted murder of law enforcement officers and illegal trafficking of explosives.

Connection to a High-Profile Assassination

This blast occurred near the location where, on Monday, Lieutenant General Fanil Servorov was killed. Servorov, a former head of the Russian General Staff’s training department, died when an explosive device planted under his parked car detonated.

Heightened Security and Unanswered Questions

Following the latest blast, Moscow police cordoned off the area and deployed a large contingent. Forensic experts and sniffer dogs were brought to the scene. The back-to-back targeted attacks, first against a high-ranking military official and now against police officers, have led to intense speculation.

The core question dominating discussions is: Who is targeting Putin’s loyalists? The attacks suggest a coordinated campaign against symbols of state authority. While no group has claimed immediate responsibility, such incidents in the past have been attributed to dissident factions, insurgent groups, or internal power struggles.

These events have cast a spotlight on the security apparatus in the Russian capital and the challenges it faces in protecting its officials amid apparent rising threats.
